Believe

Every year, about this time, we start planning the changes we want to make to our mindset, bodies, teams, and businesses. We set goals, make plans, and start our journey off great through January and February; somewhere around March and April, life starts kicking us in the face. We start to experience resistance to our goals and life changes and the pull of reverting back to common habits or, worse - autopilot. I don’t think this happens overnight, but slowly over time, with the loss of the main ingredient we take with us in the planning and pursuit process in the first place - belief.

Call it a mindset, faith, or mantra; belief is the fuel for achieving our goals. Small failures and setbacks can erode our frame of belief, while large and public failures can dash beliefs altogether. Belief, like anything else worth having, requires our resilience and dedication. Belief calls us to see beyond the setback and back to the drafting table to set our course straight and find another way to get where we want to go. When I think about what makes belief possible, I think about imagination. Have you ever watched kids play? There are no rules, and where there are rules, they become malleable to the circumstances of the moment. Kids make up games, shift the standards while they play the game, and when they get tired of playing, they make up something new or move on to something with more interest. We’ve got so much to learn from a child’s belief dream. What if I told you that the belief gene isn’t age-specific? It doesn't matter if you’re 25 or 65. You, too, can choose what rules to play with.

You might think, Coach, the stakes are higher for me than for a child. You’re right. I won’t doubt you there - all the more reason to use play to secure your belief when executing your plan. Belief thrives on consistent practice and intentional reinforcement. It’s not enough to set your sights on a goal; you must cultivate an environment where belief can flourish, even when challenges arise. This means surrounding yourself with people who support your vision, consuming content that uplifts and inspires you, and taking time to reflect on your progress, no matter how small. Building belief is like tending a garden—it requires daily care, patience, and the willingness to prune away the weeds of doubt that inevitably creep in.

Belief doesn’t guarantee a smooth journey but gives you the strength to navigate the rough patches. Every setback is an opportunity to reassess and recalibrate, not a sign to abandon your dreams. The key is approaching your goals with curiosity and adaptability, much like a child does with their games. By blending imagination with intention, you can turn obstacles into stepping stones and setbacks into setups for something even greater. So, as you head into the new year, don’t just plan for success—prepare to believe in it, no matter what comes your way. A good coach can help you focus your mindset and create a plan to get where you want to go. We help our clients by helping them determine the data points to measure progress and success. When the going gets tough, help you play with the results and imagine the game anew to reach your goals. Wanna give it a try?
