From Worrier to Warrior

It’s 4 am, and it feels like it. I’ve been tossing and turning for hours. I got up a few hours ago to sit in the sauna, hoping the heat and elevated heart rate would lull me to sleep. Thirty minutes before my sweat session, I took a drive while listening to some Lofi music with the hopes that the vibration from the car and chill vibes would steady my mind. Nope. Nothing. All I could think about was my looming deadline hovering over me like a cloud. And then it hit me - I’m worrying more than working—no more.

When I think about how challenging it can be to settle the mind when it’s full of unknowns, deadlines, family stuff, health stuff - insert your thing here:________ - I think about how many things I’ve conquered in the past and challenge myself with a question my therapist gave me: “Why would that change now?” Let’s sit with that a bit. Think through all the tough stuff you’ve accomplished in your past, things you thought would end disastrously only to overcome, and afterward, keep it moving without so much as a cupcake to celebrate your triumph. Such a robust framework - why would THIS time be different?

I think we should care about the quality of our work - our standards are what has and continues to shape our work and our relationships, but I can’t square high standards with high stress. I no longer want to try to make sense of significant opportunities that lead to big migraines. The pit stops do not define the journey to success; it’s defined by the road ahead. An old boss once told me, “Bobby, take some time off - the work will be here for you when you get back.” That wasn’t a threat; it was a promise that I was trusted and valued and that my worth wasn’t in my worry but in my execution.
